What do I do and how Periodontal Disease will affect me?
What is Periodontal Disease?
Let’s start with the definition of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It’s typically caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque -a sticky film of bacteria- to build up on the teeth and harden. In advanced stages, periodontal disease can lead to sore, bleeding gums; painful chewing problems; and even tooth loss.
What Do You Do After Getting Periodontal Disease?
First, take a deep breath, it’s going to be ok. You will most likely be referred to a Periodontist who will devise a treatment plan specifically made for you. Your hygienist may have to perform a “deeper cleaning” to remove that plaque build-up that has occurred. Your hygienist is highly qualified to perform these procedures and utilizes cutting edge technology to get you back in good shape.
Once your initial treatment has been performed you will continue with your hygienist for periodontal maintenance cleanings. As long as you continue to take care of your teeth and gums and attend your regularly scheduled appointments, your pesky perio should not be anything that inhibits you from living a normal life. If you are concerned that you might be experiencing a periodontal problem of your own, please contact our office, and don’t wait! We are here to help!!
